Website analytics

Simply stated website analytics is the study of your website visitor’s behavior. The behavior of your website visitors is useful for a number of reasons but the behavior itself can be classified as:-

  • How long a given visitor spends on your website
  • What geographical region your visitors come from
  • What time of the day do your visitors arrive
  • How many pages do your visitors view
  • How many adsense clicks (or other website objective) do your visitors make
  • What is the conversion ration of visitors to sales (or other website objective such as adsense clicks)
  • What path do you visitors take when surfing your website
  • What are the popular pages of your website and which are hardly visited.

    Goals of website analytics

Website analytics can be used to determine which of a given number of website designs yields the best results. In this way two website designs could be made and the two separate ad campaigns (to get visitors) could be used in order to compare the two designs. Website analytics are concerned with collecting various website key performance indicators (KPI). There are a number of aspects of website analytics that are examined by UZilla.org:-

  • What is the goal, or purpose, of capturing the website KPI?
  • What is the best way to collect the website KPI?
  • When collected how will the goal or purpose of the KPI be determined

    Website analytic tools

Google provides a free website analytics tool http://www.google.com/analytics/. This tool is used at UZilla.org as a method of collecting the KPIs. Other tools are available and these are also examined. The web activity logs also provide a great deal of information about visitor behavior and getting useful information from web logs is also examined.

    Website analytic techniques

Website analytical tools, however, are no use unless they are being used in conjunction with appropriate methods and techniques. These website analysis techniques are also examined via a series of original articles at UZilla.org. Search engine ranking analysis (both tools and techniques) is also a major KPI for website analytics. In fact website analytics plays a major role in each of the areas of interest at UZilla.org, namely:-

  • Website usability
  • Website design
  • Website testing
  • Website search engine optimization

In short we can't control, or improve, anything we can't measure and website analytics tools and techniques give us the capability to measure our website's key performance indicators that will assist us with our website design goals.
