Website design

When website design is not given attention, prior to the actual website production, then typically the website will evolve in an unstructured manner until it settles to an acceptable design. In particular website structure, in terms of navigation, is a feature that if not well designed from the start will be difficult to correct over time. .

Websites are designed for a purpose

Every website has a purpose, it may be to entertain, to sell books or to provide information. The design of the website should take into account:-

  • The purpose of the website, to the owner
  • The purpose of the website to the user

Both of the above purposes are important and both need to be designed into a given website. Consider a website that someone produces with the intent of making money via Google's adsense program. The website has to have content that is targeted at a given audience and the appeal of this content will be determined by the content itself and the design or overall presentation of the website. The adsense ads cannot exist on their own and the content cannot exist on its own (if the website is to make money). In the case of a website built for adsense around themed content the website designer has to balance the needs of the user (reader) with the website's ability to generate money from adsense. Sometimes it can be an art rather than a science to get the right balance, if the user is immediately confronted with prominent ads then they may not get to read the content, or stay on the website for long. If, on the other hand, the content is so strong and the ads are not that visible the user may spend hours on your website without clicking the ads that generate money. All website design produces a website with measurable quality attributes, the process of continually measuring and reviewing these attributes is called software process improvement.

    Achieving the right balance

Achieving the right balance of the website's objectives is the goal of design. There are many factors that the designer has to balance and these include:-

  • Website purpose
  • Website usability
  • Website performance
  • Website adaptability
  • Website maintainability
